Olivia

Hunter was going to Amelia’s party?

Oh shoot, oh shoot, oh shoot. “We need to keep dating,” I hissed as I slipped into Micah’s truck and shut the door.

He didn’t say a word as he pulled away from the line of cars.

“Please?” I whispered. Even though the country club was now fading in the distance, I could still feel Hunter’s eyes on the truck. “We only have to keep the charade up for one more week.”

Micah’s mouth drew into a thin line. “You sure that’s a good idea?”

The truth caught in my throat. I didn’t want to tell him, but as I’d headed to the bathroom tonight, Hunter had cornered me and asked me out. When I’d reminded him that Micah and I were in a relationship, he’d made it crystal clear that he believed I could do better. While Hunter’s behavior didn’t surprise me, given that he’d always hovered around me during etiquette class, his attention tonight made me uncomfortable.

What kind of guy asks another person’s girlfriend out on a date?

“It’s obvious you and I have nothing in common. Why would someone like you be dating someone like me anyway?” There was something defeated on his face. Something vulnerable.

I hated seeing him this way. “Micah Geode Reyes.” I pointed a finger at him. “Don’t tell me that you let Hunter get to you.”

Micah let out a groan, and I grinned, knowing that he’d be wishing Violet had never told me his middle name.

Violet and Micah’s parents were hippies at heart, and they’d given all their kids nature-related names. Violet’s middle name was Rain. Marcus, their older brother, had Forest as his middle name because Jen’s contractions started while they were hiking. And Micah’s middle name was Geode because, you guessed it, his folks loved the idea of his true value being on the inside.

“I can’t believe Violet told you that,” he muttered. “Okay. Fine. I might have let the little gremlin get to me. But you can’t deny that you’re way out of my league. You have fancy cars, designer shoes, and luxury watches. My suit’s from a thrift store, and my truck’s a work in progress. In what world would us being together make sense?”

“Anyone close to me knows I don’t care about that kind of stuff.”

Micah made a point of glancing down at my feet, and I pulled a face. “I have a thing for expensive shoes. So sue me.” I sighed. “Look, I know it’s asking a humongous favor, but could we keep dating until after the party? Pretty please? I don’t want to have to deal with Hunter. Unless…”

Uncertainty washed over me. Valentine’s Day was just around the corner. Here I was, assuming that Micah would be fine with pretending to be my boyfriend for longer, but perhaps he had other plans.

Maybe there was another girl he was interested in.

My stomach clenching, I forced myself to find out the truth. “I mean, is it going to be a problem? Will pretending to be with me throw you off your dating game?”

Please say no.
